An Evening with Terry Chimes – Celebrating 50 Years of Punk Rock
On Sunday 14 June, at the iconic 100 Club on Oxford Street, Afasic Vice President Terry Chimes hosted a fantastic evening marking 50 years of Punk Rock. It was a fitting venue: Terry appeared as the drummer with The Clash at the very first Punk Festival held at the 100 Club exactly 50 years ago.
The evening began with a meet & greet, where Terry spent time chatting with guests, signing books, posing for photos, and making everyone feel welcome. He was introduced by fellow Afasic Vice President Damian Quinn, who has DLD as an adult and spoke powerfully about the importance of the charity.
Once on stage, Terry took the audience through his early days before joining The Clash, sharing stories about Johnny Thunders, Hanoi Rocks, and The Cherry Bombz. He welcomed Anita Chellamah‑Nurse, his bandmate from The Cherry Bombz and former member of Legs & Co on Top of the Pops. Terry also spoke about his time with Generation X and Billy Idol, and introduced James Stevenson, who played in the band as well.
A highlight of the night was Terry playing songs and showing rare video footage, including a huge performance at Shea Stadium in New York City on 13 October 1982.
After around an hour, Terry opened the floor to a lively Q&A session, followed by a charity auction featuring:
- An original album
- A drum head
- A pair of drumsticks
- Two signed framed artworks (event poster & Shea Stadium poster)
- A 100 Club T‑shirt signed by Terry
- A donated book featuring Clash images and lyrics
The auction alone raised an incredible £640.
We also sold photos of the various bands Terry has played in, along with Afasic T‑shirts. Even after the formal part of the evening ended, a long queue formed for photos, signatures, and a chance to speak with Terry personally.
In total, the event raised almost £3,000 for Afasic which will be used helping children and young adults with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
A huge thank you to Terry for putting on such a memorable evening and for his generosity in supporting Afasic. And a massive thank you to everyone who attended, bid in the auction, bought merchandise, and to all our volunteers who gave up their evening to help make the event such a success.
