Every child should be able to access a high-quality education that meets their needs and allows them to thrive at school and beyond. Specialist resourced speech and language provisions can offer children who struggle with talking and understanding words just that.

The new free guidance developed in conjunction with Speech and Language UK, Afasic and Naplic is designed to help local authorities, integrated care boards, multi-academy trusts, and others set up or expand resourced speech and language provisions in mainstream primary and secondary schools. As the Government works to make mainstream schools more inclusive, these resourced provisions could be life-changing for children with speech and language challenges.

Almost a quarter of children with SEND have speech and language challenges as their primary need. Sometimes, these challenges can be short-term or preventable, but they can be lifelong, too. Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), for example, is one of the most common neurodivergent conditions and affects an estimated 690,000 school-aged children in England alone. Yet despite this, resourced provisions – dedicated, staffed spaces that offer specialist support – for children with these needs are not well-established nationwide. Our guidance is designed to help change this.

The guidance focuses on specialised resourced speech and language provisions for children with DLD, as well as other children with speech and language challenges not associated with other conditions. It covers everything from eligibility and admissions to staffing and evaluation. The guidance also showcases three schools that are already offering resourced provisions like this and seeing great outcomes for their pupils.

Children and young people who attend specialist resourced speech and language provisions learn in smaller groups, with teaching that is tailored to their needs and access a higher level of speech and language support. What’s more, they’re included fully in the life of the school, building their confidence and sense of belonging
