Support for DLD

Children with DLD need a combination of skilled teaching and speech and language therapy, though how much and how it is delivered will vary depending on the individual child’s age and language profile.

Most children with DLD attend mainstream schools, which should be able to meet most children’s needs with input from the speech and language therapist and local authority specialist support team, if available in your area.

A minority of children with severe DLD may attend a specialist language resource or base, if available in your area, or one of the small number of specialist speech and language schools. N.B. Children usually need an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) to access a place in a specialist language unit or school.

DLD Together Courses for Parents

Afasic, together with NAPLIC, organises online courses for parents or carers of children with DLD.  See link below for further information.

These resources may be useful for teachers, teaching assistants and parents of school age children.

Here you can watch a short awareness video that was filmed at our recent DLDFEST event in 2024.
