We are delighted that, once again, the Summer School Transition Courses were a great success in 2025. Eight courses took place throughout the country in different locations, including London, Manchester, Scarborough and Enfield.
The aim of these courses is to give children who have speech, language, and communication challenges, extra help when dealing with the momentous change from Primary School to Secondary School.
For the first time, children who did not have a course running in their local area were able to attend an Online Course. This National Online Course was delivered by Grace, a qualified Speech and Language therapist, and was so successful that we hope to organise more courses like this in 2026.
Most courses took place in schools. More than 80 children benefited from attending courses along with many parents, who chose to attend a Parent Workshop.
Topics the children covered included:
- Independence skills
- Reading a timetable
- Packing a school bag
- Problem solving
- Asking for help
- Social interaction and making friends
- Managing a new environment
Many thanks to our transition course coordinator Hannah, the wonderful Speech and Language Therapists, School Staff and Volunteers without whom these courses could not take place.
A big thank you also to everybody who helped to fund the 2025 courses particularly Awards for All, The Haramead Trust, The Vandervell Foundation, The Grace Trust and our Afasic Supporters and Donors.

We are constantly looking for new schools and hope to be able to reach lots more children next year. We really hope that any SLTs, SENDCo’s, Teachers or Teaching assistants that are reading this will consider delivering courses in their region. Or, if you are a parent of a child who you think would benefit from attending a course, please talk to your school and contact our Transition Course Coordinator tcc@afasic.org.uk
