About Talking and Listening

SLCN and How Afasic Can Help

Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN for short) is the term used for children who have significant difficulties with talking, listening and/or understanding language.

Confusingly, the term is often used for children whose speech, language and communication problems are caused by other difficulties such as Autism, Hearing Impairment or Down Syndrome. Afasic, however, only uses the term for children whose speech, language or communication difficulties are not caused by other types of need.

Afasic supports parents and carers with children and young people who have difficulties with listening, talking and understanding others. We know that being able to listen, understand and talk to others are crucial life skills. We understand the importance of these skills for making friends, managing emotions, learning and working. We try to present information in as clearly as possible in order to de-mystify these terms and signpost you to further information as needed.
